Las Vegas’ Circa Resort and Casino, the first Vegas resort-casino built from the ground up in four decades, has officially opened.

The 1.25 million square-foot, adults-only property is lauded as paying ‘homage’ to Vegas’ ‘Golden Era’ through vintage design, ‘old-school’ hospitality and nods to the city’s history while introducing ‘high-tech advancements’ and ‘cutting-edge’ amenities.

Conceived by developer and CEO Derek Stevens, Circa’s opening marks a series of firsts and achievements for Las Vegas:

  • One of the most ambitious projects in downtown Las Vegas’ 115-year history and the area’s first resort-casino built from the ground up in four decades.
  • World’s largest sportsbook with a 78-million-pixel screen viewable to up to 1,000 people
  • Vegas’ first adults-only resort
  • Country’s largest destination pool experience for sports fans, open 365 days a year with a 14-million-pixel screen
  • New-to-Vegas food & beverage concepts by renowned chefs and restaurateurs from across the country
  • Nevada’s longest indoor bar spanning 165 feet
  • First Las Vegas resort with a fully integrated rideshare hub

“For the past five years, the Circa team and our partners have been devoted to introducing a resort and casino experience that brings something totally new to Vegas, and in some cases, the country,” said Stevens. “I will be the first to admit that 2020 has not been easy, but this talented group persevered and has delivered on this vision, eight weeks early. I’m incredibly proud to be putting 1,500 people to work and that our doors are finally open for all to visit Circa.”

Hours before the official opening, Stevens hosted an intimate black-tie gala at the property. Las Vegas founding families and current casino operators gathered for the first roll of the dice on Circa’s casino floor.

Derek Stevens will give delegates at December’s Betting on Sports America – Digital conference the inside track on the soon-to-debut Circa Resort & Casino development that has generated so much excitement in Las Vegas.

The Circa Sports owner and CEO will share his insights on the launch of the resort casino and its vast sportsbook during a keynote interview with long-time industry insider Roger Gross, publisher of Global Gaming Business magazine.

Stevens rounds out an elite trio of operator executives who will be providing keynotes at the December 1-2 virtual event, joining the previously announced William Hill US CEO Joseph Asher and MGM Resorts CEO BIll Hornbuckle on the roster.

Few industry executives are better positioned to discuss the Las Vegas market and the growth of sports betting than Stevens, who is also owner of the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino and the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.

Stevens has been a staple of the downtown Las Vegas movement since coming to the city in 2008. His first investment was in the redevelopment of Golden Gate. Since then he has been on a mission to revitalize downtown Las Vegas and transform the thriving Fremont Street entertainment experience.

His latest project Circa could be his boldest initiative yet. The first new integrated resort casino built from the ground up in Downtown Las Vegas in four decades, Circa will open October 28, 2020.

The centerpiece of the 777 room property is the world’s largest sportsbook. The multi-level facility features stadium-style seating and a capacity of 1,000 people, a place the avid sports bettor Stevens himself would feel right at home in. Since its inception Stevens’ Circa Sports has operated books that are open to all bettors from beginners to sharps. The Circa Resorts & Casino takes the brand to an entirely new level.

The property opens at a time when Circa is also expanding outside of Nevada, having launched Circa Sports Colorado earlier this year. Stevens said despite the current pandemic, the industry still finds itself in a time of huge growth potential.

“Operators certainly have challenges right now and must be nimble in order to endure the current challenges,” he said. “Once we are able to weather this storm, and come out the other side of it, good things will be on the horizon. Circa Sports is in a great position today and well into the future.”

The addition of Stevens to the list of keynote speakers at BOSA-D amplifies the event’s standing as the gold standard for the industry.

Rasmus Sojmark, CEO & founder of event organiser SBC, said: “Derek is one of the true visionary leaders in our industry. Adding him to the esteemed list alongside Mr. Asher and Mr. Hornbuckle creates a triumvirate of speakers that are unmatched anywhere else in the event space.”

The full line-up of 130 speakers, comprising operators’ senior executives, regulators, affiliates, suppliers, and advisors, for the eight-track conference is set to be announced shortly.

The event will also have an interactive product display area where operators will be able to learn about the next generation of products and solutions from international suppliers, talk to suppliers’ expert teams, and experience the products directly through demos.

There will be further opportunities for operators and suppliers to connect in the virtual networking lounge, the meeting rooms in the virtual networking bar, and at the program of themed networking roundtables.

Betting on Sports America – Digital is free to attend. To join the U.S. and international delegates set to participate in the event, click here to register for free.

Las Vegas’ first property to be built from the ground up in over three decades, Circa Resort and Casino, has unveiled a link-up with Automated Cashless System’s PlayOn cashless table game solution.

Allowing guests to safely and conveniently access funds at table games when the venue debuts later in the year, the link-up deepens the PlayOn roll-out at Derek Stevens’ family of casinos with the D Las Vegas already boasting availability.

“Derek will be providing a new and unique gaming experience to his patrons in historic Downtown Las Vegas and we are thrilled that PlayOn will be a part of that offering,” said Steve Warner, founder and COO of ACS PlayOn

“We’ve spent significant time collaborating with the Nevada Gaming Control Board to meet all applicable MICS, technical standards, and the Nevada Gaming Commission’s responsible gaming regulations and we are now seeing significant demand for PlayOn across the state, especially with the concerns surrounding currency and COVID-19. PlayOn is safe, secure and convenient.”

PlayOn is a cashless payments solution that allows players to purchase casino chips using their debit card, and aims to eliminate the necessity of having to leave the game in order to use an ATM machine or search out a cashier cage.

“When we began developing the casino space at Circa, we knew we wanted to deliver an unrivaled experience to eager players,” added Stevens, CEO and founder of Circa. “Introducing ACS PlayOn into the mix will allow us to offer convenient game-play for locals and visitors alike, and enhance overall customer service.”

The 1.25 million-square-foot, 777-room property will stand as the tallest structure north of the Las Vegas strip, and will house a two-story casino that contains 1,360 slot machines and 49 table games.

Striving to become “a mecca for sports gamblers,” fans will be able to take in three levels of action taking place on a 78-million-pixel high-definition screen, billed as “the largest sportsbook screen in history”.

Circa Resort and Casino CEO and developer Derek Stevens has confirmed that the resort is ahead of schedule for opening, with plans to open its doors on October 28, 2020.

The resort will be the downtown’s first such entity to be built from the ground up in over three decades. The 1.25 million-square-foot, 777-room property will stand as the tallest structure north of the Las Vegas strip, and will house a two-story casino that contains 1,360 slot machines and 49 table games.

Stevens had originally earmarked a December 2020 launch following a 22-month construction process. Upon completion, the resort will have approximately 1,000 employees.

“Sometimes life throws you curveballs, and 2020 has been an unpredictable year for the entire world,” said Stevens.

“However, thanks to the creativity and ingenuity from our partners at McCarthy Building Companies Inc. and Tré Builders, we can move forward on this accelerated path and have an opening unlike Las Vegas has experienced. We are excited to see what the future holds and to give visitors and locals something to celebrate.”

Striving to become “a mecca for sports gamblers,” fans will be able to take in three levels of action taking place on a 78-million-pixel high-definition screen, billed as “the largest sportsbook screen in history”. The Vegas Stats and Information Network will also have its own on-site studio offering bettors in-depth analysis from a roster of experts.

Another of Circa’s key features will be an outdoor pool amphitheater. Its six rooftop pools will be operated 365 days a year and boast an almost 14-million-pixel screen playing the day’s sporting events.

Las Vegas casino owner and developer Derek Stevens is aiming to ‘Keep America Flying’ after announcing plans to give away more than 1,000 free flights to Las Vegas from more than 20 major US cities.

Stevens is set to reopen his own Fremont Street Experience properties The D Las Vegas and Golden Gate Hotel & Casino on June 4, under phase two of the Nevada United: Roadmap to Recovery plan from Governor Steve Sisolak.

The ‘Keep America Flying’ promotion is intended to help stimulate the tourism and airline industries “while reminding the country of the fun to be had in Las Vegas”.

Participants could book a seat by signing up at theD.com on a first come, first serve basis, however the site now stipulates that all available options have been filled.

Participating cities include Denver, Minneapolis, Dallas, Phoenix, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego and many more via Allegiant, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Sun Country Airlines.

All participants in the ‘Keep America Flying’ promotion must be at least 21 years of age. Flight recipients are responsible for return flights, hotel accommodations and all additional costs associated with their stay, including cancellations and/or rescheduling.

“As we begin to reopen our doors across the city, we are proud to help reinvigorate travel to Las Vegas while supporting airlines in America impacted by the COVID-19 crisis,” said Stevens.

“We can’t wait to safely bring visitors to the city and remind them why we’ve earned the title of ‘Entertainment Capital of the World.’

“And while we’d love for visitors to stop by Downtown Las Vegas, we primarily want to get people back to Las Vegas to experience the attractions and amenities that make it one of the greatest places on Earth.”

Stevens is set to add to his downtown Las Vegas footprint later this year with Circa Resort and Casino, a 1.25 million-square-foot, 777-room property that will stand as the tallest structure north of the Las Vegas strip, and will house a two-story casino that contains 1,360 slot machines and 49 table games.

Circa is downtown’s first such entity to be built from the ground up in over three decades and has previously stipulated a December 2020 opening.

Construction of Las Vegas’ Circa Resort and Casino has reached the halfway mark, with downtown’s first such entity to be built from the ground up in over three decades proceeding towards a December 2020 opening.

The project will be the first ground-up gaming resort in Downtown Las Vegas since 1980, with CEO and developer Derek Stevens announcing that the integrated casino resort is at the midway point of a 22-month construction process.

Located at the Fremont Street Experience, Circa intends to “honour the timeless spirit of Las Vegas while leading the charge for a bold new era with game-changing offerings”.

The 1.25 million-square-foot, 777-room property will stand as the tallest structure north of the Las Vegas strip, and will house a two-story casino that contains 1,360 slot machines and 49 table games.

Furthermore, the “world’s largest sportsbook,” operated by Stevens’ sports betting venture Circa Sports, will serve as the centrepiece of the entity.

“Reaching this milestone for Circa would not be possible without our incredible partners and construction team,” said Stevens. “Today we not only celebrate this exciting moment in Circa’s journey, but those who have helped us bring the project to life.

“I’m proud to deliver something completely new to the Las Vegas experience and can’t wait to open our doors a year from now for everyone to enjoy it.”

Each week, CasinoBeats breaks down the numbers behind some of the industry’s most interesting stories. In the latest edition we take a look at two US based developments, an ongoing scam in the Netherlands and a “rags to riches” story.

$1m

A joint venture launched by the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes, titled MMCT Venture, has made a one million dollar payment to the state Department of Consumer Protection regarding the Tribal Winds Casino, report media outlets.

The planned $300m project, being undertaken by the tribal operators of Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino, proposes to build the state’s third such property in East Windsor, in a bid to recover losses felt by the eight month old MGM Springfield, just over its northern border.

In the face of declining slot revenues for a large portion of the last twelve months, this new manoeuvre represents the first step in financing the joint venture.

Payment of $1m has made to offset the state’s regulatory costs for the project, and is said to have been a necessary measure in the ongoing process to finance and build the new gaming and entertainment complex.

3

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets has published details of an ongoing scam within the nation, which sees three agencies seek to reclaim non-existent gambling debts from consumers.

Lootsma and Partners, Bailiff Smits and Co and Inter Payment Service have all been named as forming part of the scam by the ACM, with the country’s gaming regulator, the kansspelautoriteit, backing the warning and subsequent advice issued.

It is explained that people are contacted either via telephone or email, with information that there are overdue payments that they are urged to pay, as the agencies in question stress that the debt emanated from a lottery or other game of chance.

In a media release issued by the kansspelautoriteit, it is stated: “Reports show that the collection agencies mentioned are putting consumers under pressure to pay an outstanding bill. Often there is no agreement at all, so the claim is unjustified.

“Sometimes it concerns alleged agreements from years ago. The collection agencies claim that the consumer is obliged to pay. They threaten consumers with far-reaching measures such as seizure of goods or bank accounts.”

2020

Las Vegas developer and casino owner Derek Stevens is aiming to blaze a new trail in the gaming industry, as it was revealed that his new sportsbook venture, titled Circa Sports, has received unanimous approval from the Nevada Gaming Commission for its first location.

Set to launch at the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino on June 1, a satellite program will subsequently commence at the D Las Vegas in late June of this year, designed to pave the way for the highly anticipated multi-level, stadium-style sportsbook that will debut at Circa Resort and Casino in December 2020.

The new casino property, which it has previously been stated will “be a mecca for sports gamblers,” will be Downtown Las Vegas’ first casino resort to be constructed from the ground up in over three decades.

Stevens said of the plans following being awarded a green-light: “It’s no secret that I’m an avid sports bettor, I’m taking everything I’ve learned and everything I love and bringing it all to Circa Sports, to create the best possible experience for our guests.

$5.1m

PokerStars is daring people to dream as part of new national advertising campaign set to be rolled out across Spain, as it presents the “rags to riches” story of Ramon Colillas.

The TV and digital marketing campaign documents Colillas journey from fitness trainer to global poker champion, after lighting up the poker world earlier in the year via his unlikely journey.

The new PokerStars ambassador went from winning a Platinum Pass for free entry to the $25,000 buy-in PokerStars Players No Limit Hold’em Championship, to winning the tournament and its $5.1 million prize.

Colillas fronts the new national campaign titles ‘Dare to Dream,’ which will be aired in his native Spain, highlighting the story of the 30-year-old’s “determination to compete among the elite players of the poker world and his life-changing win”.

Circa Sports has officially launched in downtown Las Vegas, as CEO Derek Stevens welcomes bettors to the new sports betting venture’s first venue at the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino.

Stevens kicked off the opening with the introduction of a $1.5m pro football contest, a mobile app and a ceremonial first bet with many of the city’s best bookmakers.

A “guests first” philosophy has been promised with “top notch customer service to visitors” aiming to appeal to both betting novices and more experienced punters, with a mobile app launched concurrently.

A variety of the city’s top bookmakers were also invited to place the first official bets at Golden Gate on opening day, with a ribbon cutting ceremony consisting of vice president of operations Mike Palm and sportsbook director Matt Metcalf.

Designed by Moser Architecture Studio, the 1,297-square-foot sportsbook at Golden Gate features a state-of-the-art video wall, LED boards displaying betting odds and two betting kiosks.

Furthermore, the season-long ‘Circa Sports Million Pro Football Contest’ will offer $1.5m in prizes, including a $1m payout for the champion. All players must be at least 21 years of age and can enter the statewide contest by registering at Golden Gate and paying a $1,000 entry fee.

Stevens commented: “The bell has rung, and we are thrilled to be taking bets of all kinds with Circa Sports. We intend to bring that old-school Las Vegas vibe to the floor, so there was no better place to bring this to life than in Las Vegas’ most historic hotel, Golden Gate.”

On June 19, Circa Sports will introduce a satellite program at sister property the D Las Vegas, with its next stop to be the multi-level, stadium-style sportsbook at Circa Resort and Casino, slated to open in December 2020.

The new casino property, which it has previously been stated will “be a mecca for sports gamblers,” will be Downtown Las Vegas’ first casino resort to be constructed from the ground up in over three decades.

“Circa Sports will take people back to old-school Las Vegas hospitality, where our guests and oddsmakers interact closely in a friendly and fun environment.”

Designed to feature “one of the most competitive wagering menus in Las Vegas,” Stevens has appointed Matt Metcalf as sportsbooks director, whose previous experience included introducing Westgate’s SuperBook.

The new offering at Golden Gate is to feature a “state-of-the-art” video wall with 18 screens, LED boards displaying betting odds and two betting kiosks.

Furthermore, a mobile component will also debut, offering opportunities for convenient wagering and live betting, with guests also able to take advantage of the ease of access Golden Gate’s sportsbook provides, including complimentary valet parking just steps away.

Metcalf said of the proposed new sportsbooks: “There is truly no casino operator who understands sports betting quite like Derek Stevens.

“Together, we’re creating a one-of-a-kind fan experience that can be enjoyed by bettors of all types. We plan to make placing bets easier than ever for advanced bettors, while ushering in a new wave of novice players who are seeking the advice of experts to help guide the way.”

Downtown Las Vegas is to see the construction of its first casino resort to be built from the ground up in over three decades, when Circa Resort and Casino opens its doors in late 2020.

Details of the venue were disclosed at an event at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center, after Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman’s state of the city address, with construction set to begin next month.

Plans for the 777-room resort, which is to rise along Freemont Street, were unveiled by casino owner and developer Derek Stevens, who along with brother Greg owns the D and Golden Gate casino-hotels.

Circa, which is to be housed on an entire city block, “stands ready to go big and go all in,” with Derek Stevens stating the property “stands ready to be a host, an entertainer and a ringleader, all in one”.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Stevens revealed: “We are going to offer things to do with a lot of fun and excitement, no matter what your age is. We are certainly going to have a bit of a focus on sports, water, sun, and it’s all themed around fun and high energy. We are focusing on a design that is consistent with downtown Las Vegas but all new.

“I wanted to make sure that in the design of the resort we remember a little bit of Vegas’ past, while we are building something brand new.

“So, we felt that the name coming together kind of represents a lot of where Las Vegas started in downtown Las Vegas.”

Circa is to feature a two-level casino, a three-level, stadium-style sportsbook lauded as the “the largest sportsbook in Las Vegas history”, several bars and restaurants, further details of which are to be revealed over the next 23 months, and a rooftop complete with six pools and a 125ft screen, capable of hosting 4000 people.

Circa’s hotel tower will be the tallest building north of the Las Vegas Strip, with the iconic Vegas Vickie cowgirl neon sign also set to feature in its lobby.

In delivering the details of the new property, Stevens spoke in further detail regarding plans to encapsulate its large scale sportsbook, which will see the studio for sports gambling news, analysis and data experts Vegas Stats and Information Network overlook the venue.

Stevens added: “When you think of a sportsbook, we want to create that wow moment, we want to create that moment that people don’t forget.

“This is going to the the greatest race and sportsbook in the history of Las Vegas, three stories, biggest screen, biggest volume, the VSiN studio looking down over the whole sportsbook, this is going to be something special, this is going to be a mecca for sports gamblers.”
