Michigan online casinos reported their second-highest monthly revenue in May, generating $251.5 million in gross receipts, a 26.6% increase over May 2024.

The May results surpassed January’s $248.2 million for the second spot all-time. The best month was March, when online casinos generated $260.5 million.

The May figure also marked a month-over-month growth of 1.4% compared to the $248.1 million result in April, continuing the state’s strong momentum. The month marked the ninth consecutive month with iGaming revenue over $200 million in Michigan.

The $251.5 million reported last month also means Michigan remains ahead of New Jersey for the second spot in the US in terms of gross gaming revenue.

While New Jersey online casinos posted a slightly higher year-over-year growth of 28.5%, their May gross gaming revenue reached $246.8 million, falling short of Michigan’s total.

BetMGM Recaptures Top Spot in Tight Race for iGaming Lead

The battle for Michigan’s top platform remains razor-thin, with BetMGM Casino reclaiming the top spot from FanDuel Casino in May. The leader posted $67.4 million in gross revenue. That was slightly ahead of FanDuel’s $65.9 million, nearly mirroring April’s results, but in reverse.

The two platforms have been battling for the top spot throughout 2025. Through April, BetMGM held a slim $300,000 lead against FanDuel. With May’s results factored in, that lead is now around $1.9 million, underscoring the close race.

After a strong April growth, DraftKings’ fortunes reversed in May. While last month it was the only platform with a positive month-over-month revenue increase, this time, it experienced one of the most significant drops. Its May gross revenue of $36.3 million represented almost a 15% monthly drop.

Meanwhile, Fanatics Casino continued its upward momentum in Michigan, with $10.5 million in gross revenue. The result gave the platform its best-ever month in the state, while surpassing the $10 million threshold.

Still, the strong result was not enough for Fanatics to hold on to the sixth spot. Golden Nugget Online Casino recaptured it with a $11.3 million result. Golden Nugget reported one of the highest monthly increases, over 50%, compared to April.

However, May’s performance aligns closer to Golden Nugget’s typical results so far in 2025, suggesting April was an outlier.

Detroit Casinos Record Their Best May Since 2019

May also marked a strong month for Michigan’s retail casinos. The three Detroit properties generated $114 million in gross revenue, up by 1.2% from May 2024 and 3% compared to April 2025.

The result also meant that the Detroit casinos reported their best May since 2019, before the pandemic, when they took in $125.8 million.

In terms of market share, MGM Grand Detroit took the top spot with 47%. MotorCity Casino had a 30% market share, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown held the last place with 23%.

MGM Grand Detroit also drove the year-over-year growth. The property’s $53.1 million revenue in May represented a 2.4% growth. Motorcity’s revenue also grew by 0.6% to $33.9 million, while Hollywood Casino posted a 0.2% decline to $25.7 million.

Caesars Entertainment has confirmed the closing of its previously announced acquisition of the operations of WynnBET’s Michigan igaming business.

The completion of the deal also marks the expansion of igaming market access for Caesars, through the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, further tapping into the potential engagement of the region.

Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital, commented on the deal: “Caesars Entertainment would like to thank the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Michigan Gaming Control Board for their collaboration through this process.”

Aiming for a smooth transition period with minimal friction, Caesars will assume operations on the existing platform under the WynnBET brand with no anticipated impact to the customer experience.

It’s expected to provide a key uplift for Caesars after the firm endured a challenging start to the year – with a “lower-than-expected hold” across several segments.

Upon publishing the group’s Q1 results, CEO Tom Reeg noted that despite setbacks due to headwinds across Las Vegas and regional operations, the operator remains “optimistic toward improved operating results throughout the balance of the year”.

He said at the time: “Operating results during the first quarter in Las Vegas are a combination of record occupancy, driven by the Super Bowl and international visitation for Chinese New Year, offset by lower-than-expected hold.”

Detroit’s three casinos have reported monthly aggregate revenue for November of $79.1m, a month in which many casino workers concluded their striking action.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board has revealed that November’s $79.1m is down significantly from the $101.8m declared during the same month the previous year, with a split of $76m generated from table games and slots, and $3.1m from retail sports betting.

The month’s revenue had also fallen in comparison to October’s $82.8m. Revenue market share was split amongst the city’s casinos as follows: MGM Grand Detroit – 39 per cent, MotorCity – 34 per cent, Hollywood Casino at Greektown – 27 per cent.

As previously mentioned, November was also the month in which casino workers who were part of a Detroit Casino Council union continued their striking action that began on October 17 until close to the end of the month.

2,100 employees across MotorCity and Hollywood Casino ended their strikes on November 19 after agreeing to a new labour deal. 1,700 MGM Grand employees continued striking until December 2.

November’s table games and slot revenue of $76m was down by 23.9 per cent year-over-year (November 2022: $99.9m) and seven per cent lower than the previous month (October: $81.7m).

The state of Michigan received $6.2m (2022: $8.1m) in gaming taxes from the three casinos during the month. $9.4m was submitted in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit.

The Detroit Casino Council has stated that strikes related to labour disputes for workers at the MGM Grand Detroit have come to an end after union members voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract.

Last month, the Detroit Casino Council of five unions – UNITE HERE Local 24, UAW Local 7777, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters – announced that a tentative five-year deal that looked to bring an end to the strikes at the city’s three casinos which began on October 17.

Workers at Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino agreed to the contract, ending their strikes on November 19 after 34 days. However, MGM Grand Casino union members disagreed with the deal and continued striking.

On December 2, 1,700 employees at the MGM Grand Casino agreed to a new labour deal, bringing an end to their strike after 47 days.

The five-year agreement includes the largest wage increase ever for MGM Grand Detroit workers: an immediate $3 an hour raise (18 per cent pay rise on average) and $5 an hour total raises over the life of the contract.

Gabriel Robert Hernandez, a valet at MGM Grand Detroit and member of Teamsters Local 1038, stated: “Since welcoming my son into the world, securing my family’s health care benefits was the most important thing to me.

“We sacrificed a lot during the pandemic, but we fought for and ultimately won a contract that secures our health care and provides significantly improved wages.”

The MGM Grand Detroit deal also includes a bonus option either upfront or in the second year of the deal, no health care cost increases for employees, workload reductions and other job protections, first-ever technology contract language, a 401K option up to $1000 and a paid Juneteenth holiday.

“Both my son and I have been on strike together, so for me the fight to protect our healthcare and win better wages was always about something bigger for my family and the next generation,” commented Alicia Weaver, a guest room attendant for 24 years at MGM Grand Detroit and member of UNITE HERE Local 24.

“Together – with the rest of our MGM family who stood with us on that picket line in the rain and frigid temperatures – we made history, and I’m proud of what we accomplished by taking a stand together.”

Patrick Nichols, a dealer at MGM Grand Detroit and member of UAW Local 7777, added: “I am happy to announce that MGM employees ratified their contract tonight. I am impressed by how all the unions and members worked together to win an excellent contract. I’m looking forward to going back to work.”

The strikes by casino workers in Detroit could be coming to an end after unions and the Motor City’s three casinos reached a tentative five-year contract, according to the Detroit Casino Council.

Following 32 days of strikes from the five unions that comprise the council – UNITE HERE Local 24, UAW Local 7777, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324, and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters – the tentative deal was announced on Friday that could bring it all to an end.

However, the strikes that began on October 17 will continue for the time being until a proposed settlement is ratified.

Covering a coalition representing 3,700 casino workers – dealers, cleaning staff, valets and food staff – at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown, the contract includes the largest wage increase ever negotiated in Detroit’s 23-year casino history.

Alongside the pay increase, featured in the deal is an immediate average pay rise of 18 per cent, no health care cost increases for employees, workload reductions and other job protections, first-ever technology contract language, retirement increases and more.

Detroit Casinos Council added that further details regarding the new agreement will not be disclosed publicly until the unionised casino workers have been given the chance to view the deal first and vote on whether they should accept it.

“Our strike showed the casino industry and the world just what Detroit’s casino workers are made of,” commented Tavera McCree, a Valet Cashier at Hollywood Casino at Greektown and member of Teamsters Local 1038.

“This is a defining moment for workers in Detroit and nationwide. The gains we have made will change the lives of so many families who are living paycheck to paycheck. I would like to thank everyone who stood strong on the picket line to make this win possible.”

According to the Associated Press, Bruce Dall, President of MotorCity Casino, stated on the deal: “We take pride in providing exceptional jobs and benefits that support and reward our dedicated workforce, and we look forward to ratification of the deal.”

Across the board decreases have been felt by Detroit’s trifecta of land-based gaming establishments through October as the impact of ongoing casino strikes is laid bare.

This has seen the three venues report revenue of $82.8m, which is down 19.45 per cent from $102.8m year-on-year. Table games and slots generated $81.7m (2022: $100.7m), while sports betting declined to $1.1m (2022: $2.1m).

This is due to approximately 3,700 workers electing to strike from October 17, 2023, in a bid to protect their healthcare and improve wages that are not keeping up with the cost of living, along with improved job security and fair workloads.

Earlier in the week, workers launched a digital advertising campaign that called on players to boycott four online casino and sports betting platforms.

These are associated with three land-based gaming establishments, namely MotorCity Casino, Hollywood Casino at Greektown, and MGM Grand Detroit. FanDuel, BetMGM, Hollywood iCasino and ESPN BET are those potentially affected.

For the year-to-date (January 1 to September 30), table games and slots revenue is 1.3 per cent up when compared to the same period one year earlier.

Once again, the aforementioned venues maintained their usual places in the standings, with MGM Grand Detroit on top with revenue of $37.3m, however, this is down 19.6 per cent year-on-year from $46.4m. Market share stayed consistent at 46 per cent.

MotorCity Casino was next in line despite a 22.8 per cent to $25m (2022: $32.4m) to secure a market share of 31 per cent (2022: 32 per cent).

Hollywood Casino at Greektown followed suit with a 11.7 per cent downfall to $19.4m (2022: $21.9m) for a 23 per cent slice (2022: 22 per cent).

Furthermore, the month also saw $6.6m (2022: $8.2m) paid in gaming taxes to the state of Michigan, with $10.1m (2022: $12.4m) distributed in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the city.

In addition, the properties reported $18.1m in total sports betting handle, with gross receipts coming in at $1.1m. This is down 22.9 per cent and 47.6 per cent from the $23.5m and $2.1m recorded during the previous year.

July QAGR per casino saw MotorCity lead the way with $669,028 (2022: $680,649), ahead of MGM’s $365,705 (2022: $711,959) and Hollywood Casino at Greektown’s $90,430 (2022: $702,147).

The trio paid $42,531 (2022: $79,182) in taxes to the state, and reported submitting $51,982 (2022: $96,778) in taxes to the city of Detroit based on retail sports betting revenue.

During the month, fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenue of $2.1m (2022: $1.5m) and paid taxes of $178,346 (2022: $126,719).

From January 1 through to June 30 fantasy contest operators reported $16.8m in aggregate fantasy contest adjusted revenues and paid $1.4m in taxes.

Detroit casino workers are to launch a digital advertising campaign that will call on players to boycott four online casino and sports betting platforms.

These are associated with three land-based gaming establishments, namely MotorCity Casino, Hollywood Casino at Greektown, and MGM Grand Detroit, that witnessed employee walkouts last month.

Those digital entities affected by the move are FanDuel, BetMGM, Hollywood iCasino and the soon-to-be-launched ESPN BET.

Other apps, such as Caesars Sportsbook, Caesars Palace, WynnBET, DraftKings, Sports Illustrated Sportsbook, and others, are not part of the boycott.

“Some users of online sports betting and casino apps may be unaware that workers at the brick-and-mortar casinos that hold online gambling licences in Michigan are on strike,” a media update confirming the move noted.

The campaign will launch today (Monday 13 November), and will aim to inform users of ongoing labour disputes, in addition to encouraging them not to use the apps until Detroit’s casino industry “offers their workers fair wages and benefits”.

“Online sports betting and online casino platforms like FanDuel, ESPN BET, and BetMGM are critical sources of revenue for the companies that operate Detroit’s three casinos,” said Nia Winston, President of Unite Here Local 24.

“Workers have been outside the physical locations 24/7 since going out on strike three weeks ago to win a fair contract. Now, they’re calling on the public not to cross their virtual picket line either, and to boycott these apps until the strike is settled.”

On October 17, approximately 3,700 workers at the aforementioned venues elected to strike in a bid to protect their healthcare and improve wages that are not keeping up with the cost of living, along with improved job security and fair workloads.

The first casino strike in Detroit history includes dealers, cleaning staff, food and beverage workers, valets, engineers, and more

According to a Detroit City Council report, each day of a strike could put approximately $738,000 in city ($452,000) and state ($286,000) tax revenues and $3.4m in casino operator revenues at risk.

Employees have pointed to sacrificing wages and taking on heavier workloads to ensure that the industry could recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the union noted that Detroit casino workers have received three per cent raises, while inflation surged 20 per cent.

Last week, MGM Resorts, Caesars and Wynn Resorts struck tentative agreements with Las Vegas’ Culinary and Bartenders Unions that would’ve seen 35,000 workers from 18 casinos take to the streets in what was billed as potential being the “largest hospitality worker strike in US history”.

Casino workers in Detroit have staged a walkout amid accusations that gaming establishments have played hardball over wages and healthcare, and failed to acknowledge sacrifices made across recent years.

Thousands of union workers went on strike yesterday Tuesday 17 October, after months of negotiations and meetings failed to result in an adequate agreement.

UNITE HERE Local 24, which earlier in the month revealed that 99 per cent of workers voted to such action, noted improvements are being sought “after years of pandemic hardship”. Casino management are said to be “unwilling to deliver a fair contract for workers”.

A late proposal was rejected after failing to meet five core concerns. These include healthcare, job security, retirement packages, high workloads and securing “significant wage increases”.

This action involves 3,700 workers employed in positions including dealers, cleaning staff, food and beverage workers, valets and engineers at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

“Making the decision to strike is never easy, but it’s past time for the workers who keep Detroit’s casinos running to get their fair share,” said Nia Winston, President of UNITE HERE Local 24, the union of hospitality workers in Detroit.

“The city’s big three casino operators are earning more than ever, and we’re prepared to stay out on strike until we get what we deserve.”

Employees have pointed to sacrificing wages and taking on heavier workloads to ensure that the industry could recover from the pandemic. Since then, the union noted that Detroit casino workers have received three per cent raises, while inflation surged 20 per cent.

According to a Detroit City Council report, each day of a strike could put approximately $738,000 in city ($452,000) and state ($286,000) tax revenues and $3.4m in casino operator revenues at risk.

“We are fighting from Detroit to Vegas, from Biloxi to Pennsylvania, to raise wages and standards for casino workers,” commented Gwen Mills, Secretary-Treasurer of UNITE HERE International Union, the union of North American hospitality workers.

“Hospitality workers overall across the US and Canada kept the doors open during the pandemic, risking their health and forgoing raises.

“Now they are striking in Detroit, Los Angeles and Vancouver, along with hundreds of thousands of other workers from other industries, demanding a share in the prosperity that the hospitality industry is currently experiencing.”

Workers across Detroit’s three casinos could strike as early as next month should such a decision be authorised in a vote that is due to be carried out today (Friday 29 September).

The United Auto Workers union has warned that staff members that are responsible for the majority of operations at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood at Greektown could stage a walkout as negotiations regarding new contracts continue.

The union said that staff, whose duties include slots and table games on the gaming floors as well as restaurants, bars, retail outlets, hotels, cleaning, maintenance and more, are holding a vote that, if passed, could pave the way for potential strikes at the three gaming establishments.

Conversations between casinos and workers have been ongoing since the early stages of September, with a top priority cited as winning wage increases to keep up with the rising cost of living.

Should workers authorise a strike in today’s vote, the Detroit Casino Council, negotiating committee for workers. could call for strikes as soon as mid-October, when contracts expire, according to the union.

“Following COVID shutdowns, Detroit casino workers sacrificed raises and shouldered heavier workloads so the industry could recover,” the UAW said.

“Now, workers are struggling to make ends meet, even as the industry generates all-time record high gaming revenues from in-person and online gaming.”

Earlier in the month, it was reported that Detroit’s three casinos endured a year-on-year revenue drop during August, with a sports betting drag offsetting a slight uptick across slots and table games.

The three venues saw overall revenue come in at $104.9m, which is slightly down from the $106.14m figure that was recorded one year earlier.
