The acquisition of Betting Hero from FansUnite Entertainment has been completed by Hero Group for an aggregate purchase price of $37.5m, adjusted on a cash-free, debt-free basis.

Hero Group is a newly incorporated entity 60% controlled indirectly by Betting Hero’s Co-Founders Jai Maw and Jeremy Jakary, with financial backing and 40% controlled by geolocation compliance, anti-fraud, and identity technology provider GeoComply.

Maw, Co-Founder and President of Betting Hero, commented: “When PASPA was repealed in 2018, Jeremy and I had a vision of helping more people safely learn how to enjoy the incredible digital experience offered by our customers.

“Six years later, we’ve activated over 500,000 players across the nation, and with the GeoComply relationship, we have the firepower to offer more to the industry and our customers. GeoComply and Betting Hero see the world in a similar way, and we’re excited to have their backing to scale through our next growth phase of Betting Hero.”

Betting Hero is described as a “live activation and research services company” that utilises its extensive “Hero” network to engage directly with players via “dynamic, face-to-face interactions at casinos, arenas and partnered bars”.

“GeoComply shares Jai and Jeremy’s vision to deliver the very best player experience for our industry,” stated Anna Sainsbury, CEO of GeoComply.

“While digital analytics alone can offer great insights, they lack the in-person experience for operators to see, hear, and learn from real customer interactions. Betting Hero bridges that gap by delivering exceptional real-world UX insights.

“We experienced that firsthand ourselves as customers of their Research division, and now we’re excited to support Betting Hero in using that expertise to drive even greater growth.”

In addition, Betting Hero provides operators and suppliers with “actionable intelligence and insights through its purpose-built and industry-specific consumer insights and testing division; Betting Hero Research”.

William Zeralsky, VP of Marketing Strategy & Performance at PENN Entertainment, noted: “As a leading operator in the hyper-competitive North American digital markets, PENN Entertainment relies on the Betting Hero Research division as a trusted partner, delivering timely, relevant, and actionable information that accelerates our digital transformation. Their insights are invaluable.”

FansUnite acquired Betting Hero from its parent company American Affiliate in 2021. As a result of the sale, the only brand in FansUnite’s portfolio is BetPrep

The company will delist its common shares from the Toronto Stock Exchange on 21 August, ceasing trading of its common shares in the Canadian public market. FansUnite will also apply to withdraw the quotation of its common shares from the OTCQB as soon as possible after the delisting.

Commenting on the sale of Betting Hero, Scott Burton, CEO, Director and Chair at FansUnite, added: “The completion of this sale represents the culmination of a tremendous amount of effort from the entire FansUnite team, and I am proud of what we have accomplished.

“I extend my sincere thanks to our shareholders for their support throughout this journey. I also want to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of our Board, advisors, and legal teams, whose dedication was vital in bringing this transaction to a close.

“We wish the Betting Hero and GeoComply teams continued success and look forward to exploring new opportunities that will create value for our shareholders.”

GeoComply has united with Sightline in a gaming-focused partnership, aiming to combine knowledge in both compliance technology and fintech.

As a result of the deal, Sightline will integrate GeoComply’s IDComply verification solution and geolocation tools across its digital payments suite for land-based casinos and online gaming operators.

The duo are seeking to tap into the use of digital wallets and transactions in igaming, which has come with ID certification challenges leading to more customer friction, particularly in areas such as Nevada.

Sightline will use IDComply to authenticate customers on its gaming payment platforms and simplify cashless wagering accounts and online registrations.

Sightline SVP of Business Development, Rose Zwirn, said: “Digital payments continue to proliferate in the regulated gaming industry, and it is essential to have solutions that safely, securely, and swiftly validate customers’ identities.

“Implementing these tools across Sightline’s payment solutions will significantly decrease the time it takes to validate an identity and they will bolster compliance with the evolving regulations that govern digital financial transactions.

“Our vision is to create an omnichannel customer experience where patrons can seamlessly enrol, fund, and play their game of choice in under 180 seconds, putting gaming more in line with payments technologies in areas like retail and ecommerce.”

Ensuring ID verification is a requirement of the US Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC). The partners believe this new collaboration will help operators meet these requirements whilst also strengthening KYC and AML protocols.

Sam Basile, VP of Business Development at GeoComply, added: “Our companies have a long history of collaboration and we’re excited to be working together to implement our GeoComply Core and IDComply solutions for Sightline’s customers.

“Our goal is to provide digital trust in every online transaction while opening the funnel for legitimate players and stop fraudsters from entering the digital gaming ecosystem. Working with best-in-class partners like Sightline gets us closer to that goal.”

Canada-based online sports betting and casino platform Bet99 has recruited the services of GeoComply, which will serve as the operator’s geolocation supplier in the province of Ontario.

This will see the group, which is striving to attain “the very best customer experience”, gain solutions for desktop and mobile that are designed to help increase pass rates, detect fraud, and boost gross gaming revenue.

Lindsay Slader, GeoComply Senior Vice President, noted: “We are thrilled that Bet99 has adopted our new technology, which makes geolocation compliance easier than ever for players and easier than ever for BET99 to integrate, helping to keep them compliant, profitable and safe.”

Furthermore, the agreement will also comprise anti-fraud and geolocation solutions provider’s latest introduction. This aims to allow players to validate their location in one click without leaving the page or downloading a companion app or plugin. This, it hoped, will eliminate a key player pain point and boost conversion.

Paul Nyzuk, BET99 Chief Technology Officer, commented, “We are excited to partner with GeoComply. They have more experience than any other geolocation provider and a commitment to innovation, as evidenced by GeoComply’s new No Download Browser Solution.

“Our priority is ensuring the best player experience while achieving the highest standards in compliance. GeoComply’s cutting-edge technology brings tremendous efficiencies so BET99 can achieve these goals.”

Earlier in the year, Laura Petrauska, Head of Casino at BET99, spoke to CasinoBeats regarding the best-performing slot innovations for BET99, as well as the importance of striking a balance between offering popular and innovative titles.

“While it may not necessarily be an innovation, we definitely have seen cluster mechanics gaining popularity,” she said.

“I think that while we are still seeing Megaways slots performing well, right now traditional slot paylines are becoming less and less common, with different cluster mechanics taking the lead.”

GeoComply has stressed the importance of legalisation for player protection and tax revenue after releasing a report titled ‘From the Sideline to the Mainstream’ following the first week of the 2023 NFL season.

Reviewing data collected between September 3-10, the geolocation solutions provider processed 242.3 million transactions during the time frame, up 56 per cent from the corresponding period one year earlier.

Furthermore, week one also saw 1.1 million new player accounts created across US sportsbook customers, which represents an increase of 40 per cent year-on-year.

The data also highlighted that 97 per cent of all online sports wagering transactions were made through a mobile device, with 75 per cent of those coming on iOS.

In addition, the first-quarter touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown during game one, when Detroit Lions shocked Kansas City Chiefs, sparked a huge flurry of activity, with the company processing 4,200 transactions per second immediately following the score.

“Consumer awareness around the security and fairness of legal online betting platforms has played a pivotal role in the responsible growth of the industry,” commented Anna Sainsbury, GeoComply Co-Founder and CEO.

“While the increase in our transaction volume emphasises the appetite for regulated online sports betting, our data also accentuates an urgent call to action. States without regulated online sports betting should get off the legalisation sidelines and unlock their ability to protect consumers and generate significant tax revenue.”

Collectively, the three markets of Ohio, Maryland and Massachusetts, which are experiencing their first NFL season, combined to account for 253,000 of the new accounts as well as a total of 41.3 million geolocation transactions.

Today, approximately 47 per cent of the US population has access to legal and regulated online sports betting, a figure that will be boosted to 51 per cent when North Carolina, Maine, Vermont, and Kentucky launch regulated betting as expected in the coming month

However, with “almost half of the country unprotected”, GeoComply has warned of the “significant consumer demand in six states where lawmakers are considering bills to legalise and regulate sports betting next year”. These were named as Alabama, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

With comings and goings commonplace across the industry, Star Entertainment, Citizen and San Manuel are among those to have bolstered their teams with key hires.

GeoComply

GeoComply has detailed a pair of appointments that will be charged with shaping the group’s continued growth strategies as further expansion is eyed.

The first of these sees Lindsey Drake become Chief Financial Officer, where she will oversee operations that include financial planning, budgeting and capital management.

In addition, Kelly Schaefer joins as Chief Human Resources Officer to spearhead the company’s HR strategy, focusing on talent acquisition, development, and engagement.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lindsey and Kelly to the GeoComply team,” commented Anna Sainsbury, GeoComply’s CEO.

“Their extensive expertise and leadership in their respective fields will be instrumental in guiding our financial strategy and strengthening our talent capabilities.

“As we continue to expand our market presence and develop groundbreaking cybersecurity solutions, their contributions will be critical in driving our growth and further solidifying our position as a global leader.”

Quick Custom Intelligence

Jarvis, a generative AI rules engine that talks to four target operational systems, has been deployed as the Chief Operating Officer of Quick Customer Intelligence.

The company, which specialises in such technologies, will be responsible for project management, task escalation and currently reads and processes all of the CEO’s emails.

Ralph Thomas, CEO of QCI, explained: “Our growth is enabled by generative AI, this democratises our company by allowing organisation and management skills to be facilitated, thus empowering our team members and removing the need for an additional management layer.

“Jarvis is at the centre of our system and his interface provides for a single view to all systems running the QCI business.

“This arms our team members with algorithm driven analysis of issues and challenges and gives them the tools to reach a quick and efficient resolution.”

Bragg Gaming

Chris Looney has announced his departure from Bragg Gaming Group, where he held the position of Chief Commercial Officer for a two and a quarter year stint.

However, the former Red Tiger Commercial Director, who was also previously at Microgaming for almost nine years, has stressed confidence that the company “is very well set up for continued growth”.

He wrote: “A heartfelt thank you to all of my friends and colleagues at Bragg Gaming for making the last two years fun and exciting – there are too many names to mention individually.

“It’s been tough but we’ve changed the face of the business, created a super successful content vertical, hit huge milestones and grown exponentially into new markets with all products. And of course there is the run club

“We’ve forged great relationships with customers on both sides of the pond and I personally look forward to reconnecting again in the future.”

San Manuel Band of Mission Indians

Simon Fothergill has been appointed as Chief Information & Technology Officer at the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

In the role, he will report to Brigitte Saria, Chief People & Infrastructure Officer, in overseeing the development, continued growth and strategic execution of the technology roadmap for gaming, hospitality and entertainment, as well as the tribe’s future business endeavours.

He initially joined San Manuel in 2019 as Vice President of Information Technology Business Services, when he was responsible for identifying talent, innovative technology, products, and systems in preparation to scale and innovate for the opening of Yaamava’ Resort & Casino at San Manuel

“It’s an honour to be given this responsibility and an exciting opportunity to be tasked with executing the tribe’s vision,” Fothergill said.

Star Entertainment Group

Star Entertainment Group has suggested that it has completed an ongoing board renewal program following the appointment of Peter Hodgson as a Non-Executive Director.

The beleaguered casino group, which has faced regulatory action across Australian states and also has AUSTRAC action and class action lawsuits pending, initiated a board overhaul last year.

Hodgson will join the board immediately upon the receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals. In the interim he will serve as a board observer.

David Foster, The Star’s Chair, noted: “On behalf of the board, I welcome Peter to The Star. With his extensive commercial, governance and risk management experience, Peter is well positioned to contribute to The Star’s remediation and transformation.”

Citizen

Dr Toby Sucharov has been appointed Chief Technology Officer of Citizen – a payment services provider to the igaming industry.

He had previously served as Playtech’s Head of UK Innovation and as Head of Games Platform as a Service.

“As Citizen gears up for more growth as we enter the second half of 2023, it is vital that we have the best leadership team in place to support and drive the business forward,” commented James Neville, Co-Founder and CEO of Citizen.

“Toby brings a great wealth of experience from the igaming sector and in scaling-up technology solutions, and we look forward to working with him on our mission to simplify the way we pay by leveraging innovations in alternative payment methods.”

Atlas-IAC

Atlas-IAC has hired Miloslav Ivanov as the latest member of its senior management team, with this latest addition taking on the role of Chief Sales Officer.

One of Ivanov’s primary responsibilities will be to establish strong partnerships with Atlas’ global client base, playing a role in its plans for continued growth throughout 2023.

On his new role, he remarked: “I am thrilled to be joining such an upwardly mobile brand in Atlas-IAC. The company has such a talented team and I am sure we will do great things together.

“Our aim will be to continue with our expansion across regulated territories with a huge focus on the LatAm market.”

There are plenty of crypto sceptics in the igaming industry, but one former US Secret Service cybercrime specialist believes such payments could create a safer environment for operators.

The crypto market has been evolving since its infancy stages and the introduction of Bitcoin more than a decade ago. Volatile values and the lack of any deposit security safety nets have however brought a wave of scepticism, contributing to the space being viewed by some as a risky investment.

On the other hand, there are those who have found the concept of digital assets necessary for societal progression. For them, cryptocurrencies are the foundation of tomorrow’s global economy and financial independence.

And perhaps because of that, or perhaps because of the convenience a crypto transaction offers, high public interest in relevant crypto products and services has caused an explosion in market offering.

Gambling operators are also jumping into this trend, looking for ways to integrate crypto as another payment rail that can potentially unlock new opportunities for both operators and customers.

“Cryptocurrencies offer a more comprehensive range of payment options for customers”

We spoke with Michael Dawson, Law Enforcement Liaison at fraud prevention specialist GeoComply, about the implications of crypto payments adoption driven by a global regulatory shift.

Dawson boasts an impressive résumé in financial crime fighting, having joined the US Secret Service in 1999 as a member of the Electronic Crimes Task Force and going after online bad actors for 23 years. He started when the internet was still in its infancy, on his way becoming a recognised guest lecturer on fraud, money laundering, cryptocurrencies and organised crime.

Part of his responsibilities included being the lead case agent for a multi-agency Priority Transnational Organised Crime investigation called ‘Operation Crypto Runner’, which focused on identifying, mitigating, seizing, arresting and disrupting cybercrime money laundering globally.

Today he shares this experience with the GeoComply Risk Services team in an effort to provide customers with a more robust response to the constant shifts affecting the crypto market.

In terms of the popularity among gambling operators of tools related to crypto processing, Dawson underlined that market demand is being driven by the practicality of the payment option and how easy it is to do it.

“Cryptocurrencies offer a more comprehensive range of payment options for customers,” he said. “Individuals who do not have access to traditional banking options can now place a wager.

“Money laundering and fraud will occur in any payment structure”

“Also, customers who prefer to utilise their current cryptocurrency assets for sports betting now have another payment option. It further provides a potential tax benefit for all parties involved.”

And with tax comes security, with Dawson explaining that there are strong know your customer and anti-money laundering checks in place, using blockchain technology to analyse the origin of the crypto payment and the legitimacy of the transaction without interfering with the speed and simplicity of the process, which usually outperform those of payments in fiat.

Another thing to note is that operators themselves can reject private unknown crypto wallets because they are often associated with criminal activity, such as hiding illegally-gained proceeds, Dawson explained.

“Money laundering and fraud will occur in any payment structure. Introducing cryptocurrency in an operator’s payment ecosystem could potentially increase the threat of money laundering and fraud. However, illicit funds can be stopped or seized faster for an overall safer transaction with blockchain technology and tracing,” he said.

“With proper AML controls deployed by operators to include KYC and geolocation data, cryptocurrency’s transparency as a payment platform could potentially be safer and faster in detecting fraud and money laundering.”

The crypto space has also been evolving globally in terms of regulations and how big a part regulatory bodies play in it. March last year saw the Biden administration take action in favour of a crypto strategy that outlines the country’s approach to such currencies.

“Crypto regulations and political viewpoints around the world see cryptocurrency in numerous ways”

Part of the executive order’s content stated that federal agencies are to be given permission to map out any regulatory changes they deem necessary by assessing the economic implications and risk to national security from integrating digital assets into the financial system.

“Crypto regulations and political viewpoints around the world see cryptocurrency in numerous ways. Some are fully embracing cryptocurrency, while some global regulators are banning the use of cryptocurrency altogether,” Dawson said, referring to the drastic moves made by the likes of China, Qatar and others.

“The future is unclear in many countries. However, a middle-of-the-road approach to regulations, which benefits the industry and government, will allow a roadmap for a safe cryptocurrency environment in the gaming and financial sectors.”

For operators looking to globally expand their crypto offering, the main challenge will be allowing specific transactions geographically based on country-specific laws, added Dawson.

“You will excuse the shameless plug, but this is where GeoComply comes in. I worked in the US Secret Service, tracking down criminals using cryptocurrencies for money laundering and other cybercrimes. If I had access to GeoComply’s technology, it would have made my investigations far easier,” he said.

“…gaming operators should move forward to embrace crypto as a payment structure as future regulations evolve”

“Geolocation technology was the determining factor in enabling the rollout of state-by-state online sports betting and igaming in the US. Similarly, it can create comfort for governments and regulators that crypto payments in gaming, the finance industry, and elsewhere are safe and viable.”

GeoComply is working with Dawson to increase the adoption rates of crypto payments by operators, ensuring that their tool is in full compliance with crypto regulations as they continuously evolve.

“Operators can deploy various know your customer and geolocation compliance steps to ensure they are processing transactions from genuine registered account holders and acceptable jurisdictions,” he explained.

“Operators utilising GeoComply’s geolocation technology will quickly reject payments from OFAC-sanctioned countries or other restricted gambling areas.

“Further, operators should have a clear framework for taking deposits from only reputable cryptocurrency exchanges and not unknown private wallets typically used to assist criminals in laundering illicit cryptocurrency.”

Dawson finished by reiterating that the speed, simplicity, and potential tax benefits of crypto payments open a whole new payment structure for operators, especially those in igaming, and that this could lead to new opportunities by attracting a customer flow that does not use traditional banking services.

“Most importantly, gaming operators should move forward to embrace crypto as a payment structure as future regulations evolve. Cryptocurrency payment adoption, along with effective KYC, geolocation, anti-fraud, and AML infrastructure could allow for a safer gaming payment environment for all forms of payments,” Dawson concluded.

Soft2Bet has appointed Damian Finan as Director of VIP and Sales, bringing in over 15 years of gaming experience.

Finan’s previous roles include VIP Management with PokerStars and leading Genesis Global’s VIP department.

He is tasked with building upon Soft2Bet’s growth and producing a VIP and Sales strategy to elevate the company’s status.

Finan remarked: “I’m pleased to be given this opportunity to step into a leading role in a company as dynamic and forward-thinking as Soft2Bet. It’s an exciting time for the company and I am equally excited to help push it to the next level.”

Aristocrat Leisure

Aristocrat Leisure has added Jennifer Aument to its board as a Non-Executive Director, citing international industry experience.

Aument brings over 25 years of experience in the development, delivery and operations of major infrastructure assets to Aristocrat.

She also has experience in both Australian and US publicly traded companies, having most recently served as Chief Executive of consulting firm AECOM.

Aristocrat Chairman, Neil Chatfield, said: “I am delighted that Jennifer has agreed to join the Aristocrat board. Jennifer has a particular understanding of US and Australian environments, the complexities of supply chains and the delivery of major projects, and is a thought leader in the use of consumer digital technology. Jennifer also brings strong government relations and public affairs capabilities.

“Jennifer is an impressive, people-oriented business leader, with a track record of active community engagement. I am pleased to welcome Jennifer to Aristocrat and look forward to her contribution to our ongoing success.”

Marker Trax

Marker Trax has hired Val Apoderado as Vice President of IT Operations and Engineering.

Joining in February, Apoderado will be tasked with planning and executing all technical operations and quality assurance initiatives. He will also advise on all processes, systems, and data issues alongside the ongoing product performance and enhancement.

Marker Trax President, Charlie Skinner, stated: “The crux of our success is managing and tracking customers’ credit activities, and having robust, secure, and regulatory-compliant systems in place to manage that data is of paramount importance.

“With Val leading these focused efforts, we’re taking another step forward in our industry-leading position in the cashless credit gaming sector.”

BETER

BETER Live has named Edvardas Sadovskis as Chief Product Officer.

With more than a decade of experience, Sadovskis joins BETER Live from BetGames, where he rose from Studio Coordinator to Head of Product for Betgames & Showgames over ten years, working across various teams from studio to customer service, business development and product.

As Chief Product Officer, Sadovskis will oversee the product roadmap, manage product teams and ensure live content meets and exceeds operator and player expectations.

Anna Vikmane, Director at BETER Live, said: “I am delighted to welcome Edvardas to the team and for him to take charge of our product teams and roadmaps. Given his extensive knowledge and passion for sports and games of chance, Edvardas is an ideal fit not only for the Live Casino business unit but also for the whole BETER company.

“I have no doubt that his expertise will lead to the development of exciting new products in the near future.”

GeoComply

GeoComply has appointed cybercrime expert and former US Secret Service Special Agent Michael Dawson as a Law Enforcement Liaison.

Joining GeoComply’s Risk Services team, Dawson previously spent over 23 years with the Secret Service, becoming a leading investigator of cybercrime, fraud, and money laundering related to cryptocurrencies.

“While automating fraud alerts is a big part of what we do to protect our customers, we have found that machines still don’t learn as fast as fraud evolves,” said GeoComply’s Director of Risk Services, Danny DiRienzo.

“Our fraud-fighting capabilities are therefore rooted in a blend of human analysis meshed with the very best that data science can provide.”

Dawson commented: “This feels like such a good fit for me because it allows me to continue the fight against fraud using GeoComply’s cutting-edge technology. Geolocation is such an effective tool. If more of the banks and platforms I helped had used GeoComply, it would have made investigations a lot simpler and the life of the criminals a lot harder.”

GeoComply has suggested that data collected provides “compelling evidence” that Ontario’s regulated market is attracting attention from around the world.

This follows iGaming Ontario providing a one-year anniversary breakdown that highlighted that the province delivered $46.5bn in total wagers and approximately $1.4bn in total gaming revenue during its maiden 12 months.

The fraud prevention and cybersecurity solutions provider revealed that more than 744,000 users from around the world attempted to log in 19.9 million times to Ontario operators since the market debuted on April 4, 2022.

Data collected by the group also highlighted that over 54,000 users from within the US attempted to log in 305,000 times to Ontario operators.

In addition, in excess of 3.3 million location spoofing attempts into the province’s operators also occurred from around the world.

Danny DiRienzo, GeoComply Director of Risk Services, commented, “Online fraud is not uniquely a sports betting or igaming problem. Recent data shows that cybercrimes were up 50 per cent in 2022 across all forms of e-commerce.

“However, our industry’s high standards of compliance put us in a strong position to combat it. Because every bettor must verify their location, we have the data to stop fraud before it gets a foothold.”

The information studied also demonstrated that it’s not all a case of basking in the glory of a maiden 12 months, with the market gaining the unwanted attention from fraudsters.

Operator customer data demonstrated that over 219,000 devices have been prevented from gambling for fraud reasons, with 1,045 fraud rings affecting multiple operators detected.

The fraud attempts, said GeoComply, mostly concerned identity theft and bonus abuse, with some account takeovers and credit card chargebacks.

The company added that its services prevented over 127,000 devices known to be associated with fraud, 56,000 with multiple users, 34,000 using illicit software and almost 1,500 that had been jailbroken or tampered with, from infiltrating the regulated market.

“Ontario is such a large market and the opening of any market results in bonus offerings attracting fraudsters,” added DiRienzo.

“This, coupled with the traditional gray market operations in Canada, resulted in experienced fraudsters hunting bonuses from day one, as anyone with a set of stolen identities could collect bonuses from several operators.

“GeoComply remains vigilant alongside our operator partners. During the last 90 days, a third of GeoComply’s fraud investigations have involved Ontario operators, despite Ontario accounting for far less than a third of our overall traffic.

“The investigations have affected most Ontario operators, so fraudsters are targeting almost everybody.”
