National Lottery has secured its licence from the Malta Gaming Authority in preparation for its takeover of the National Lottery of Malta, according to Malta Today.

The IZI Group subsidiary’s 10-year term as the country’s new lottery operator started today, July 6, replacing previous incumbents Maltco Lotteries.

The Grand Lottery, the Lotto, Super 5, Tiritombola, Fast Keno, scratch-cards, sports betting, and electronic gaming machines will all be continued by National Lottery, which recently underwent a corporate rebrand.

Following the launch, Economy Minister, Silvio Schembri, commented: “I’m sure the new national lottery operators will continue to add to the popularity of the lotto and Super 5, as well as introduce other games, which will further marry the list of games on offer.

“Our responsibility goes beyond a mere licensing within our regulatory framework. Together we ensure that National Lottery plc continues to promote, design and put into practice the principles of responsible gaming, while protecting its customers.

“The economic profit from gaming should be given its importance, but not at the expense of the gamblers.”

Meanwhile, Carl Brincat, CEO of MGA, said that the Authority is confident that operators will devote all necessary resources to maintaining the high level of operation of this licence, as well as protecting the interests of their customers and ensuring accountability in the games.

After forming an alliance with Big Time Gaming, the Megaways mechanic is set to become available to Kalamba Games’ suite of content.

Under the rems of the deal, the licence will allow Kalamba Games to integrate the mechanic into its game launches moving forward, further developing its game portfolio of over 50 titles.

“The Megaways formula has proven to be a hit with players globally and we are pleased that this latest agreement with Kalamba will allow for even more innovative and original ideas to be added to the much-loved mechanic,” remarked Nik Robinson, Chief Executive Officer at Big Time Gaming.

The Romanian market continues to go from strength-to-strength as Leap Gaming becomes the latest firm to receive a licence for its igaming products.

Granted by the Romanian National Gambling Office, the Malta-based casino and virtual sports content provider gained its class two permit for its gaming software provisions, allowing Leap to launch its products to B2C operators in Romania.

Leap also noted that its licence approval serves as “another step” in the company’s expansion path into regulated markets as it follows several licensing “milestones” reached in recent months, such as Sweden, Greece, and Italy.

The firm’s entry into Romania also continues a flurry of activity in the regulated market in 2022 which has seen a host of companies within the igaming sector embark on their first ventures into the country.

Earlier this week, Slotmill linked with Avento in a licence agreement that saw the supplier’s titles gain certification for the Romanian market resulting in the latter’s brands gaining access to the former’s catalogue of slot titles.

In addition, February witnessed a wave of activity which saw the likes of Esa Gaming, Push Gaming, and OKTO, step foot into the country’s regulated space.

Speaking to CasinoBeats towards the back end of 2021, Robert Lee, the Commercial Director at Realistic Games, stated his company “had an eye” on Romania for some time due to its “well-established gambling heritage”.

He stated: “There’s been a surge in growth in the last few years particularly since igaming was first regulated and while some of that undoubtedly is down to the closure of land-based locations during lockdowns, it has nevertheless left the online sector in a very healthy position.”

GentingBet has applied for a Spanish casino and sports betting licence, hoping to launch in the market by the end of this year.

Jeremy Taylor, managing director of Genting Online, said: “Gambling is an important part of Spanish culture. The country is of significant size, has one of the highest per capita spend in Europe and has consistently grown during the past 10 years or so.

Genting is a huge global business with a significant UK casino estate and has big ambitions for its mobile, live casino and sportsbook products. We believe GentingBet’s wonderful heritage, social responsibility focus, live casino expertise and comprehensive betting and gaming suite will resonate well in Spain – as it will other European markets,” said Taylor.

“Having recently opened our new Interactive Headquarters in Malta, we are now perfectly placed to capitalise on the opportunity that the European online market presents.”

Taylor said the operator had taken advantage of the one-year window offered to operators and submitted an application to the Spanish regulator, Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego.

“If successful, we hope to roll out in Q4 of 2019,” he added.
