Each week, CasinoBeats breaks down the numbers behind some of the industry’s most interesting stories. Today we feature BetGames.TV’s latest ‘unique’ approach, BettingUSA.com joining the NCPG and Play’n Go’s information security acqusition.

6

BetGames.TV has launched 6+ Poker, a game featuring a reduced 36-card deck, that continues its ‘unique’ approach to delivering a fresh take on existing casino games.

Both “subtly and radically” different from a traditional poker hand, the concept of 6+ Poker is based on a variation of the popular standard ‘Hold Em’ version.

The standard rules of the game, said the company’s COO Aiste Garneviciene, have been tweaked for “absolute user interaction, encapsulating an individual look, feel and gameplay”.

Each draw consists of a 36-deck card with the lowest card number being a six. Big hands are in play much more often because of the increased mathematical probability of winning with, for example, a straight, full house or three of a kind.

BetGames.TV CCO Richard Hogg is thrilled at the prospect of the new game taking the market by storm and explained that in the industry of iGaming, a company must always look to create “new win-opportunities” for stakeholders.

“The game is based on creating a feeling of winning big especially with 36 cards in the deck and non-stop action,” he added. “There are also highly competitive odds and win-chances.”

163

Penn National Gaming has acquired a 36 per cent stake in Barstool Sports following the completion of an approximate $163m multi-faceted deal.

Unveiling the igaming and sports betting partnership, the casino and racetrack operator becomes Barstool’s exclusive gaming partner for up to 40 years and gains the sole right to utilise the brand for all online and retail sports betting and online casino products.

Jay Snowden, president and chief executive officer of Penn National, said of the announcement: “This exciting new partnership with Barstool Sports reflects our strategy to continue evolving from the nation’s largest regional gaming operator, with 41 properties in 19 states, to a best-in-class omni-channel provider of retail and online gaming and sports betting entertainment.”

After a three year period, Penn will increase its ownership to approximately 50 per cent with an incremental investment of approximately $62m, consistent with the implied valuation at the time of the initial purchase.

Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, commented: “This opportunity is a dream of mine and why I started Barstool Sports in the first place. Barstool Sports has a deep sports and gaming history and from the moment we met Jay and the Penn National team we knew this could be an exciting and game changing partnership and we can’t wait to get started. I think with our shared vision and goals, we are uniquely positioned to be a leader in this business.”

Calling on others to join the initiative, BettingUSA.com, the US online gambling affiliate, has pledged to donate one per cent of all earnings to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).

The move has been made in order to help minimise the harms that it says ‘will likely occur’ as a result of the expansion of gambling and sports betting in the country.

“NCPG advocates for states to earmark one per cent of gambling revenues to responsible gaming and problem gambling programs, and since most states fall well short of that target, we believe that it is in the best interests of the industry to contribute,” stated Steve Ruddock, analyst and content director at BettingUSA.com’s.

Keith Whyte, NCPG executive director, explained: “The rapid expansion of sports betting and mobile gambling has led to numerous challenges and significant opportunities for everyone involved, including affiliates.

“These gambling affiliates play an important role in the online gambling ecosystem, and they have the unique opportunity to take a leadership role in responsible gambling efforts in the emerging US market.”

27001

Play’n Go, the gaming content developer, has been granted the ISO 27001 certification, an international standard in information security.

Having been awarded this certification, Play’n Go can now guarantee customers they are compliant with national and international regulations (such as GDPR), which in turn minimises the risk of costly penalties and fines.

Cedric Mallia, security and GDPR manager, discussed the latest certification: “ISO 27001 is a testament to our commitment to our client’s security and well being in the industry. ISO 27001 it is not a mandatory standard, but we are willing to go above and beyond to ensure that we are giving our customers more.

“It shows we are continuing to build a solid security foundation based upon international standards and best practice, and taking appropriate control measures to protect confidential and privileged information. Clients know they are in the best hands with us.”

The ISO 27001, which is described as ‘a lifestyle that empowers a business to improve its overall information security posture, is awarded to companies that adopt an information security management system that takes into consideration people, processes and systems.

The National Council on Problem Gambling has established the Tribal Advisory Council, representing a “deeper level of collaboration to address matters of responsible gambling and problem gambling that are of importance to Native American communities”.

Although the NCPG has worked with tribal gaming entities for several years, the Tribal Advisory Council has been created “to increase awareness and respect for Native cultures as they relate to all facets of gambling so that these cultural practices can help other Native and non-Native communities”.

In addition, expertise and momentum for NCPG’s culturally specific work will be provided by the Tribal Advisory Council, “while recognising the importance of Native American history and sovereignty in consultation with Native American leaders and experts”.

Several executives from across the tribal gaming industry have been named as founding members of the NCPG Tribal Advisory Council, including:

  • Raquel Buari, J.D., Executive Vice President, Four Winds Casinos
  • Jacob Coin, Executive Advisor, San Manuel Tribal Council, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
  • Shannon Dictson, Mescalero Responsible Gaming Program & President, Responsible Gaming Association of New Mexico
  • Anika Howard, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and CEO of Wondr Nation
  • Maria Lopez, Executive Director, Pascua Yaqui Tribal Gaming Office
  • Matthew Morgan, Chair, Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association
  • Ray Pineault, J.D., President and CEO, Mohegan
  • James Siva, Chair, California Nations Indian Gaming Association

“Our work with tribes is based on a deep respect for Tribal sovereignty and our core values of neutrality, collaboration, respect and credibility,” commented Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG.

“We have a responsibility to listen and learn, as well as the opportunity to share our knowledge as we seek to reduce the social costs of gambling addiction and improve health and wellness in all communities.

“The relationships and partnerships we have forged over the years are the strong foundation for this exciting new project.”

To help facilitate the Tribal Advisory Council’s work, NCPG has formed a partnership with Valerie Spicer and Sheila Morago of the Trilogy Group, a Native American-owned and operated organisation with over 50 years of combined experience in governmental affairs, business, economic development and tribal gaming.

Valerie Spicer, Founding Partner and CEO of Trilogy Group, noted: “We applaud the formation of the NCPG’s Tribal Advisory Council and look forward to supporting stronger connection with the Tribes.

“This work acknowledges the significance of Tribal Gaming in the gambling sector, the impacts of Tribal gaming on communities, and ways we can support finding balance in helping people heal from gambling-related harm respectfully amid the complexity.”

As part of efforts to provide culturally specific education, Tribal Advisory Council members will take part in two sessions at the NCPG’s National Conference on Gambling Addiction and Responsible Gambling 2024, taking place on July 17-19 in San Diego, California.

These sessions are ‘Truth and Rehabilitation: Recognising and Addressing Historical Trauma in Tribal Communities Through Rehabilitation’ and ‘Perspectives and Advancements in Tribal Responsible Gaming’, which are both taking place on July 18.

The SBC Gaming Regulation and Compliance Forum gazed into the crystal ball this week, providing a closer analysis of what the future holds for igaming regulation, while urging operators to take a leadership role when it comes to social responsibility.

Moderated by James Kilsby, Chief Analyst at VIXIO, the panel entitled Regulation 2030: Anticipating Future Compliance Challenges’ emphasised the importance of collaboration as the framework around social responsibility evolves and the potential for federal intervention increases.

Painting a picture of her ideal outcome for the industry Cathy Judd-Stein, the Former Chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, emphasised her optimism that regulators will embrace further collaboration with operators as ambitions to eradicate the threat of the black and grey market are realised.

Louis Rogacki, Assistant Attorney General, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, echoed this sentiment as he urged operators to be more forthcoming with solutions when it comes to RG and tackling the black market.

He said: “Regulators shouldn’t always have to go to the industry to provide them best practices, they should be coming to regulators. If the industry doesn’t heed the warnings it will lead to federal intervention, which is not a good scenario for the regulated industry.”

Judd-Stein added that the base built is a strong one as solid connections have already been formed, while specifically referencing Massachusetts for praise as a region that has taken a strong lead in terms of advertising regulations. Building on this, she told the audience that they have regulation pending to provide broader prohibitions when it comes to gambling advertising.

That being said, she detailed that federal intervention may well play a vital role in terms of the detection and tackling of unlicensed operators, stating that the industry shouldn’t be hesitant to ask for support when it comes to this eradication of the black market.

Cole Wogoman, Senior Manager, Government Relations and League Partnerships, National Council on Problem Gambling, stated his belief that federal intervention is highly likely and downplayed the sentiment that it would definitely be a bad outcome.

A national standard in terms of RG is an avenue that Wogoman believes could be fruitful in improving the approach of RG. However, he highlighted that it wouldn’t have to be federal or come from congress.

Providing further analysis of the market, he emphasised that ‘culture matters’, and the type of stringent affordability checks being implemented in the UK simply wouldn’t translate successfully to a US audience.

Rogacki also agreed that attempts to bring UK-style affordability checks to the US markets would be futile in the bid to build the most impactful regulatory framework.

Nonetheless, the scrutiny being placed under many new entrants to the market is too significant of an obstacle according to Behnam Dayanim, Partner, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, who revealed that some of the most talented people are being discouraged from entering the igaming space.

He told the panel that ‘regulators should step back and take a look at what they don’t need to regulate’, as he urged the need for evolution when it comes to the regulatory strategy being undertaken in the market.

MGM Resorts International and BetMGM have expanded their support of mental health research and service provider Kindbridge as the US market enters Problem Gambling Awareness Month.

The operator has also joined the National Council on Problem Gambling in recognising PGAM, where it will display new GameSense messaging prominently throughout MGM Resorts properties nationwide, as well as in the BetMGM app.

Kindbridge Research Institute and Kindbridge Behavioral Health services help to “better understand the problems that exist within at-risk communities, delivering evidence-based treatment for gambling disorder”.

MGM Resorts has donated $100,000 to the Kindbridge Research Institute, supporting a voluntary medication trial for veterans experiencing gambling addiction in Las Vegas, a first-of-its-kind treatment to help “reduce gambling urges and symptom severity among veterans with gambling disorder”.

Treatment providers at the Las Vegas Veterans Affairs Residential Recovery and Renewal Center in partnership with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas will complete the research as part of the institute’s 50x4vets program, a multi-year research initiative to increase gambling disorder research in veterans by fifty times in four years.

“This contribution will help explore and identify innovative treatment for a population our company cares deeply about,” commented Stephen Martino, SVP and Chief Compliance Officer at MGM Resorts.

“We have a longstanding commitment to supporting military members and their families year-round and are privileged to invest in research that benefits this important community.”

Nathan D Smith, Executive Director of Kindbridge Research Institute, stated: “This is such a promising intervention. We are so grateful for MGM Resorts’ support of this research to improve the lives of veterans and extend the work of the many great scientists, treatment providers, and donors of the 50x4vets program.”

In addition, BetMGM and Kindbridge Behavioral Health have expanded their problem gambling referrals partnership.

Building off the BetMGM-Kindbridge Colorado pilot programme reaching its sixth month, the collaboration will provide problem gambling referrals in Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ontario.

“We are proud to lead the way in providing individuals with this potentially life-changing support and are pleased with how the program has performed so far,” noted Rhea Loney, BetMGM’s Chief Compliance Officer.

“This expanded investment underscores our dedication to ensuring those who need care can receive it. As access to sports betting and online gaming continues to grow, so should access to problem gambling treatment and care.”

The service will offer “direct access to comprehensive mental health assessments, treatment, and group support services”.

Since being introduced in Colorado, residents who have opted to be banned from gambling through the state’s self-exclusion programme have actively received referrals for voluntary treatment from BetMGM.

“We welcome BetMGM’s decision to extend mental health services to players in distress across multiple jurisdictions,” added Daniel Umfleet, CEO of Kindbridge Behavioral Health.

“This initiative is a positive step toward supporting individuals facing challenges with gambling. It underscores the importance of accessible help and the role we all play in fostering safer gaming environments.”

Jackpocket Casino, the online casino offering of US lottery app Jackpocket, has become the first US operator to receive Internet Compliance Assessment Program certification.

Provided by the National Council on Problem Gambling, the certification is said to represent ‘the highest standard’ of US online responsible gambling and has been handed to Jackpocket due to its ‘demonstrated dedication to player safety’.

The certification will be valid for two years and has been administered following a ‘rigorous evaluation’, coming in the form of an audit completed by responsible gambling consultancy firm Gambling Integrity

“Our mission to provide a fun and responsible online casino experience rests on ensuring the highest levels of safety and security. Every step we take is with the goal of safeguarding our users,” said Jackpocket CEO and Founder, Peter Sullivan

“We are proud of the fact that with Jackpocket Casino, players can confidently participate in their favourite games, knowing that their safety is not only a priority but also professionally validated by the NCPG.”

The operator demonstrated its ability to protect players through features such as customisable play limits, with players able to restrict deposits, spending, playtime and logged-in time levels.

Jackpocket Casino also offers time-out and self-exclusion abilities within its platform, allowing customers to suspend their gaming activity for specified durations.

Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director, added: “In achieving iCAP accreditation, Jackpocket Casino has emerged as a pioneer in prioritising player protection and responsible gambling practices within the US igaming landscape.”

“We applaud Jackpocket for emphasising the safety of their users and for setting an exemplary standard for the industry.”

The certification comes shortly after it was announced that DraftKings agreed to acquire Jackpocket for a total consideration of $750m, which was revealed alongside the operator’s Q4 2023 results

Jason Robins, Co-Founder and CEO at DraftKings, commented on the acquisition: “We are very excited to enter the rapidly growing US digital lottery vertical with our acquisition of Jackpocket.

“This transaction will create significant value for DraftKings not only by giving our customers another differentiated product to enjoy but also by improving our overall marketing efficiency similar to how our daily fantasy sports database created an advantage for DraftKings in online sports betting and igaming.”

The National Council of Problem Gambling has begun its annual Gift Responsibly Campaign, raising awareness of the risks of youth gambling.

The campaign, created by the NCPG and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours at McGill University, spotlights the risks associated with buying lottery tickets as gifts for children during the holiday season.

In total, 66 lotteries and 84 community organisations are taking part in the 2023 campaign, bringing attention to stopping children from being exposed to gambling via lottery ticket gifting, which could lead to gambling problems later in life.

“With the growing social acceptability and opportunities available for gambling on an international level, it is important to remember that even young people may experience gambling-related problems,” noted Jeffrey Derevensky, Director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours.

“The Gift Responsibly Campaign is a great reminder for adults not to gift lottery tickets to minors.”

Organisations signed on to the Gift Responsibly Campaign will educate communities on the dangers of gifting lottery tickets to children, raising awareness of youth gambling risks and promoting responsible gambling practices amongst those of legal age.

Participating companies can raise awareness of the campaign via public service announcements, social media messaging, digital advertising, in-store signage and retailer training.

The campaign is also endorsed by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, the World Lottery Association, and the European Lotteries.

Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director, added: “As we embrace the spirit of giving during the holiday season, it’s crucial to recognise that lottery tickets are not suitable gifts for children or teens.

“We applaud the numerous lotteries and community organisations for joining the campaign to amplify this vital message, fostering public awareness and understanding of the potential risks associated with youth gambling.

“The Gift Responsibly campaign stands out as one of the largest international responsible gambling awareness campaigns, underlining our collective commitment to safeguarding youth and promoting responsible gambling practices worldwide.”

The National Council on Problem Gambling is to distribute $176,000 of funding to five organisations under the latest wave of its Agility Grant initiative.

This financial support is given to programs dedicated to advancing problem gambling prevention, with an emphasis placed on prevention innovation, collaboration, amplification and community impact

The first grant, supporting prevention innovation, is handed to the Alabama Council on Compulsive Gambling Prevention and the ‘It’s More Than Just a Game’ scheme. This will deliver gambling prevention education to middle school students across the state.

Elsewhere, the Problem Gambling Coalition of Colorado, in partnership with the Denver Justice High School and the Denver Art Society, will look to drive awareness and education to high school students.

Under the Agility Grant’s Prevention Amplification division, the AdCare Educational Institute of Maine, alongside the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center, will produce a graphic novel about youth gambling prevention as part of a Youth Gambling Prevention Graphic Medicine project.

In addition, the LCADA Way will launch the Lorain County Problem Gambling Prevention Initiative to raise awareness about the risks associated with gambling and emphasise positive decision-making skills.

The final recipient is the Maryland Council on Problem Gambling, which will launch the Culturally Infused Problem Gambling Prevention for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumers program.

“Through Agility Grant funding, we aim to foster dynamic and responsive problem gambling prevention programs, helping to ensure that communities across the country are equipped to address this critical need with flexibility and innovation,” said Keith Whyte, NCPG Executive Director.

“Each recipient receiving support this round displayed exemplary commitment to cultural competence, tailoring their approaches with sensitivity to the diverse needs of the populations they serve.”

The Agility Grant program is in part made possible by a multimillion-dollar, multi-year commitment from the National Football League, with additional support from FanDuel, to NCPG as part of the League’s public awareness program designed to educate fans to engage in sports betting responsibly

This will award more than $1m dollars over three years to establish and expand problem gambling prevention efforts across the country

Agility Grants are awarded through two funding rounds each year. The spring 2024 funding round will be open for applications from January 17 to February 28, 2024, with awards announced in early April 2024.

The National Council on Problem Gambling has begun a strategic partnership with Mindway AI, bringing the latter’s Gamalyze solution to its responsible gambling website – ResponsiblePlay.org.

Gamalyze is a self-test designed to spot risky gambling behaviour, using neuroimaging insights to provide individuals who may be at risk of developing gambling-related problems with personalised interventions.

NCPG noted that the partnership with Mindway AI will help them give “more engaging and actionable insights” and take a “significant leap forward” in improving their responsible gambling programmes, as well as the tools and services they have available for US players.

“We are thrilled to announce our exciting partnership with NCPG nationwide in the US,” commented Rasmus Kjaergaard, CEO of Mindway AI.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to innovation in responsible gambling and our shared vision of creating a brighter future. Together, we will pave the way for industry transformation and redefine what’s possible. This partnership marks the beginning of a new era, and we’re ready to lead the way.”

The NCPG’s ResponsiblePlay helps those who choose to gamble to keep it fun with resources and information on how to play safely, problem gambling and where to get help if they need it. The website is also supported by the NFL via the NFL Foundation.

Last month, Mindway AI also agreed to a Gamalyze partnership with the German sports betting association Deutsche Sportwettenverband.

Keith Whyte, Executive Director at the NCPG, added: “Education plays a pivotal role in preventing gambling-related harm.

“The integration of Gamalyze into ResponsiblePlay.org will empower visitors with an innovative tool to help them make well-informed choices about their gambling behaviour.”
