Playtech has partnered up with Kindbridge, the world’s first virtual mental health clinic for gamblers and gamers, to conduct new research on gambling treatment.

The research will focus on the mental health of gamblers, gamers and those suffering from digital dependency in order to identify areas to help and support them. This will result in the creation of an evidence-based model for gambling treatment in a telehealth setting through the newly formed Kindbridge Research Institute

The aim of the partnership is to use technological advancements to improve the understanding and treatment of gambling and digital dependency related harms, enhancing treatment efficacy in a virtual setting.

The Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey is being commissioned by the Kindbridge Research Institute to set up the evidence-based telehealth model, which will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments and support for digital gambling related harm.

“The research partnership with Kindbridge and Rutgers University will play a critical role in helping the sector design and deliver high quality digital wellbeing and mental health support for those at-risk and affected by gambling related harm.” said Mor Weizer, Playtech CEO, adding:

“We are delighted to partner with Kindbridge Research Institute and Kindbridge clinical network as they pioneer the next generation of gambling treatment, services and support in the US.”

Kindbridge is working to create access to care pathways through telehealth that will eliminate barriers for gamblers and gamers to specially trained resources that can help them actively manage their mental health.

In order to do this, the virtual mental health clinic is working with US casino operators as well as insurance companies and social impact organisations, allowing the institute to analyse player data, alongside its own retrieved from its clinical network, to provide a better understanding of the origins of potential harmful gambling and gaming behaviour.

The data research will be used to create personalised intelligent approaches to treatment, designed to have the greatest impact for those that need help, and is expected to become available within the next 18-24 months.

Lia Nower, J.D., Ph.D., professor and director of the Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University and lead researcher on this study, commented: “We are excited to partner with Kindbridge to build a standardized and effective treatment framework for problem gambling and video gaming.

“Kindbridge is the first treatment agency in the U.S. that is exclusively focused in these areas, and delivering treatment we can test for effectiveness fills an unmet need in this time of rapid expansion.”

Through the partnership, Playtech is also providing Kindbridge with knowledge and support on digital learning from its Playtech Academy team, helping to build the Kindbridge Internal Learning Management System to be used by therapists and internal staff. Kindbridge’s therapists will undertake thorough training while Playtech helps to digitise its content.

Daniel Umfleet, CEO of Kindbridge, concluded: “Combining data from players and Kindbridge’s clinical network will result in meaningful insight that has never before been achieved.

“The scale of the data sets mean we can gain in-depth understanding into those who are currently suffering from harmful gambling behaviours, as well as members of their support network who may also be affected.

“This research will allow data scientists, academics and researchers to gain more insight on effective support and treatment in a digital environment than ever before.”

Online casino brand PlayStar Casino has entered a multi-year deal with Caesars Entertainment, securing market access in Pennsylvania.

The deal comes ahead of the brand’s plans to make its US market debut later this year in New Jersey.

Once launched in Pennsylvania during Q2 of next year, the addition of the state will double the casino’s total addressable market by way of population and gross gaming revenue.

Adam Noble, co-founder and chief business development officer at PlayStar Casino, said: “We are thrilled to have secured market access in Pennsylvania through this multi-year deal with Caesars, allowing us to double our addressable market.

“This is the second market access deal we have secured after announcing our entry into New Jersey earlier in the year and will continue to seek such partnerships as we expand the PlayStar Casino brand.

“We are looking forward to working through the regulatory process with the Pennsylvanian Gaming Control Board and all going well look forward to launching to players in Pennsylvania in the first half of next year.”

The operator is powered by the GiG platform after recently signing a long term partnership with the group. Through the agreement, which builds upon the foundations of their initial partnership, GiG will supply its igaming platform technologies, powering the company’s entry into the state.

PlayStar aims to provide “an online casino experience like no other” through personalisation, engagement and “exemplary” customer service.

Entering the market will allow the company to capitalise on the spill-over effect from its branding and marketing activity in New Jersey, with local campaigns also set to go forward.

Sydney-based slot provider Lightning Box has made its online debut in the Colombian online Market with two of its most popular recent releases with Betsson.

The studio has entered the new market with the support of its distribution partner, SG Digital, releasing titles Blown Away and Dragon Palace.

Dragon Palace has already gathered an array of land-based fans in the South American country following a launch on Inspired alongside Lost Temple.

Peter Causley, CEO and co-founder of Lightning Box, explained how the online roll-out served as proof that the supplier’s products appeal to a universal audience. He explained: “Colombia’s slots players have been enjoying two of our games in bricks and mortar venues for some time now, so we’re excited to be able to offer them games on their personal devices too.

“Dragon Palace was a natural one to take live after its early successes and we hope Blown Away goes down well too. We also hope that Colombia is the first of many countries to welcome Lightning Box’s games in Latin America as the area continues to regulate.”

Earlier this year, Lightning Box made its debut in the Norwegian market after agreeing to supply its games to Norsk Tipping – a Hamar-based company that offers a range of lottery, sports betting, slots and instant games.

Lightning Box praised the partnership, saying that it “presented them with some interesting opportunities”. Causley expressed his pleasure to be entering the new market, acknowledging compliance with its strict limits on maximum stakes and wins.

DraftKings has announced that it has entered into a strategic consulting agreement with the Division of Addiction at Cambridge Health Alliance – affiliated with Harvard Medical School.

The agreement will see the Division, in coordination with the DraftKings responsible gaming team, create a systems-based safer play approach to training the business’ employees in responsible gaming. This will include a logic model, conceptual map, needs assessment schedule and an evaluation plan.

Jason Robins, co-founder, CEO and chairman of DraftKings, said: “We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Division on Addiction at Cambridge Health Alliance to expand our research-driven approach to responsible gaming.

“Evidence-based and data driven strategies, created in coordination with CHA’s premier researchers, will enhance our player safety policies, product tools and employee training.”

DraftKings’ responsible gaming mission is to mitigate harm and protect vulnerable populations using technology, providing training and resources for employees and consumers, and by supporting evidence-based research.

Furthermore, the company provides responsible gaming tools for customers including: limit setting, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion. In addition, it is a contributor to the International Center for Responsible Gaming’s Fund to support research on sports wagering and is also a member of the American Gaming Association.

In 2016, the division sought out research on daily fantasy sports play where they enjoyed exclusive access to anonymised DraftKings customer data in order to better understand responsible play.

The research collaboration saw presentations at international conferences and published peer-viewed articles, offering seminal observations of daily fantasy sports play. In addition, DraftKings received feedback opportunities to aid the company’s commitment to providing a safe environment for its players.

Debi LaPlante, PhD, principal investigator, director of the division and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, commented: “We look forward to continuing our engagement with DraftKings on these strategic consulting, training, and dissemination activities and believe that this work will break new ground in responsible gaming.

“Sharing scientific knowledge with DraftKings to advance new responsible business processes will help players at risk of gaming-related problems. With the rapid expansion of sports betting across the United States, this is the perfect time to build actionable and evidence-based strategies for DraftKings.”
