Aristocrat Gaming has announced the first rollout of its NFL-themed slot portfolio outside of the continental United States of America in Puerto Rico.

The global designer, manufacturer, and distributor of land-based slot and electronic games will distribute NFL Triple Score to 13 casinos on the Jackpot del Encanto link in Puerto Rico.

The NFL Tripe Score slot is available on gaming floors alongside Jackpot del Encanto, which is a program featuring select slot machines in participating casinos across the island. It features a progressive jackpot, beginning at $20,000 and increasing as more people take part.

Aristocrat has outlined that the game is on the MarsX Portrait Cabinet, and modeled after the ‘wildly successful’ Bao Zhu Zhao Fu game family. The game features 32-team graphics, symbols and NFL game footage, exclusive to Aristocrat through its licensing arrangement with the Football League.

Craig Toner, CEO of Aristocrat Gaming, commented, “This launch is a major step forward in continuing our successful partnership with the NFL. The NFL has immense popularity globally with fans all across the world, and we are thrilled to now bring the game to a broader stage. We look forward to seeing the excitement from players in Puerto Rico and continuing the success our award-winning NFL portfolio has seen in North America.”

The company plans to continue its rollout beyond the shores of continental America, with LATAM and Europe earmarked for future releases.

Could NFL-based slots head to the UAE?

In October 2024, Aristocrat Gaming became the first international slot company to be granted a gaming-related vendor license by the United Arab Emirates’ General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA).

The license allows the Australia-headquartered company to provide its hardware and services and gaming content through its gaming machines, as well as online games and technology, to other commercial gaming operators who have received a license from the regulator.

Puerto Rico’s largest casino, Casino Metro, has teamed up with Caesars Sportsbook to announce the opening of a sports betting division at the land-based venue.

Under the Metrobets with Caesars Sportsbook brand, the collaboration also has plans to bring the Caesars Sportsbook mobile betting app to Puerto Rico, which remains subject to regulatory approval.

Ismael Vega, General Manager of Casino Metro, commented: “We are proud to launch the “MetroBets with Caesars Sportsbook” brand, at Casino Metro, generating more than 30 new jobs for our workforce.

“The foray into the world of sports betting is a natural step for our operation, which has been characterised by constant innovation. Due to its complexity, as usual, we were immersed in a process of analysis and preparation to achieve it and we are proud to achieve this alliance with a giant like Caesars.”

The 7,000 square foot Caesars Sportsbook is set to be completed in the second quarter of 2023, using three betting windows and 12 self-service betting kiosks for customers to place wagers.

Additionally, the sports betting venue will feature more than 25 LED television screens and odds boards, in a bid to provide ‘the ultimate sports viewing experience’ to Casino Metro patrons.

“As we pursued sports betting in Puerto Rico under its unique framework, we wanted to align with the best possible partner that would provide deep, localised knowledge of the market,” added Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital.

“We found that partner in Casino Metro, which has a strong brand and customer base in the Puerto Rico market.”

DraftKings has detailed an array of impending new market entries, as well as a view that a softening aggression of new market offers, in addition to an overall lowering of promotional intensity, particularly in New York, will see the group “reach the long-term targets that we’ve set out”.

Following the completion of its Golden Nugget Online Gaming purchase, the gaming, sports betting and DFS firm is expected to go live in Ontario in the near future, pending licensure and regulatory approvals.

For the second quarter of the year, DraftKings anticipated that these two actions would contribute revenue of $20m-$25m and negative adjusted EBITDA of $35m-$45m, figures which could swell to $130m-$150m and negative $50m-$70m, respectively, for the full year, assuming a May launch in the Canadian province.

“Ontario represents about 40 per cent of Canada’s population, and Ontario would be the fifth largest US state by population if it were in the US,” commented Jason Robins, DraftKings’ co-founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chair of the Board.

“However, due to the presence of grey market operators, many of which have been present in Ontario for several years, we do not believe that the timing of our launch will have any impact on the share we are able to achieve in that province.”

Debuts in Maryland, Ohio and Puerto Rico are being prepared for launch upon receipt of approval from regulators, with Kansas also on the radar after a mobile and retail sports wagering bill passed the legislature and is now pending executive action.

“We are also very excited by momentum in California,” continued Robins.

“The approximately 1.6 million signatures submitted by Californians for solutions to homelessness and mental health support will likely allow us to qualify the ballot measure for the 2022 November ballot. This is a really important step.

“Once the signatures are verified, then the initiative will be placed on the ballot in November. And if the initiative passes with a simple majority, then it becomes law.

“From there, regulators will implement the framework, and we are hopeful that we can get live sometime in 2023, pending licensure and regulatory approval. California, of course, represents a significant revenue and adjusted EBITDA opportunity, with approximately 12 per cent of the United States population.

“In fact, if California were a country, it would be the fifth largest economy in the world ranked by GDP. In short, from a legalisation perspective, there is a lot to look forward to.”

Elsewhere, DraftKings continues “to be hopeful that there will be something done” in its home state of Massachusetts, adding that its products legal in the Commonwealth “is very important to us”.

In the earnings call following publication of DraftKings’ first quarter performance the Silver State was also brought to attention, with Robins quizzed DraftKings’ potential entry into Nevada’s retail and online sports betting spaces.

“Well, we’ve been very interested in Nevada,” he commented. “And right now, we’re exploring opportunities there. It’s obviously a state that attracts a lot of attention because of its association with gaming. There’s a decent-sized market there in terms of online sports betting.

“That said, there’s also some things that make it a little bit less integrated with our business, such as the need to have in-person registration to open a mobile account, as well as some processes that make it difficult to connect wallets and apps with the rest of the country.

“But we are certainly interested in Nevada. We are looking into it. And I think that if the opportunity presents itself, we’d love to be able to offer customers in Nevada our products.”

Continent 8 Technologies has opened its data centre in Puerto Rico as the firm aims to solidify its position within the ever-expanding Latin American market.

Following its opening, Continent 8 will now offer its full suite of services based out of Puerto Rico, connecting to more than 80 locations across four continents.

Gabriel Szlaifsztein, general manager for Latin America at Continent 8 Technologies, said: “The LatAm market is opening up at pace and in Puerto Rico we have a jurisdiction that offers a great deal of potential for operators and suppliers.

“The launch of our services in Puerto Rico aligns with efforts to be first to market in the key regions being targeted by our customers and also in our belief that Latin America will become one of the most significant online gambling markets in the world.”

The data centre and strategic point of presence in Puerto Rico adds to the company’s data centre and PoP in Bogota, Colombia, which includes a public cloud solution. Services in Peru are set for launch in the second quarter of the year, expanding the company’s footprint even further.

Back in November 2021, the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission started to accept applications from operators wanting to secure an online sports betting licence in the market, which is estimated to generate upwards of $18m in its first full year.

The opening of its Puerto Rico data centre follows on from Content 8 Technologies recent Amazon Web Services Advanced Consulting Partner recognition

Less than a year after its AWS Select approval, the status elevation, which saw the firm build out its capabilities, is said to strengthen the company’s position as a cloud and connectivity provider to the gambling industry as it advances up a tier of AWS partners.

In a statement released by the office of Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló, plans have been released which propose the authorisation of sports betting at casinos, racetracks, hotels and online across the country.

If approved, the government hopes that by bringing sports wagering into the legal space, it can generate up to $3bn per year by 2023. The bill aims to legalise betting on sports and esports, as well as regulating fantasy sports.

Rosselló said in his communiqué: “This industry has the potential to convert Puerto Rico into a jurisdiction in the vanguard of allowing the establishment of this new model, which will have a positive effect on our economy.

“We have worked on aggressive legislation that aspires at being able to market the island at the international and national levels as an attractive destination for the millions of people who bet on sports events.”

The statement noted that revenue generated from gaming and betting will be distributed to help fund the retirement of pensioners and youth sports programs. It will also be used to pay for prevention and treatment of gambling addiction, policing and education.

“Electronic games are a growing segment, with an estimated 400 million people who form a younger demographic global audience,” continued Rosselló . “It is estimated that in the gaming industry these will have a global economic impact of over $3bn in 2023.”

The proposal will now be passed to Puerto Rico’s legislative assembly for further scrutiny. It must be approved by lawmakers before it can come into law.

Clarion Gaming Event Director Greg Saint believes that this week’s Juegos Miami event has a major role to play in helping to create sustainable gaming economies throughout the LatAm region.

Saint explained: “Our objectives in launching Juegos Miami three years ago, were to meet the demands of the market for a C-Level event which brought together gaming’s leading innovators, thinkers and political influencers in a unique and dedicated environment.

“I’m delighted that we have come some way in achieving this and that Juegos Miami not only serves as a shop window for the industry but also as the main event at which operators and regulators can meet, discuss, listen and understand each other’s positions on important issues and principles.”

Clarion believes the opportunity for commercial decision makers to engage with regulators is key to the creation of a sustainable gaming economy and the Juegos Miami Country Roundtables, which will feature senior regulators and government officials representing Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Uruguay, are a prime example of such an approach.

Saint added: “The industry faces a difficult task as it endeavours to establish a positive reputation with other sectors of the economy, not least with the financial institutions which are fundamental to the smooth and efficient running of the business world.

“There’s no doubt that Juegos Miami, provides a professional environment in which to showcase the industry and in the process address reputational misconceptions which hamper the development of a gaming economy that can grow and develop in a sustainable way. I believe the huge increase in the number of C-Level registrations underlines Juegos Miami‘s status as LatAm gaming’s most influential networking opportunity of the year.”

The positive response to Juegos Miami has not been restricted to the increase in C-Level delegates with 47 commercial organisations set to feature with either a stand, showroom or courtesy of a sponsorship presence.

COMMENT: Conferences are becoming increasingly important forums for the industry to get together and discuss best practice on universal issues, such as sustainability and social responsibility.
